May 14, 2018 What: Morel Mushroom Hunting Location: Madison County, Nebraska along the Elkhorn River. Conditions: Sunny and warm, 80 degrees. After a few days of rain, followed by a day of warm sunshine, things have really taken off around here.  I checked two separate spots today, both along the Elkhorn River in Madison County, Nebraska.  My first spot was definitely the most productive and I ended up hiking for about 3 hours longer than I had anticipated.  The forest edges produced a few mushrooms, but my most consistent mushroom hunting was definitely in the heart of the timber.  I’m getting the impression that

May 12, 2018 What: Morel Mushroom Hunt Location: Madison County, Nebraska along the Elkhorn River. Conditions: Rainy and cool, 60 degrees. We finally got the much needed rains the last few days.  Looking at the precipitation charts, it looks like just under an inch of rain has fallen in the last 36 hours.  I had much higher hopes for today’s mushroom hunt as I figure we have been missing the moisture more than anything else. May 7, 2018 What: Morel Mushroom Hunt Location: Madison County, Nebraska along the Elkhorn River. Conditions: Sunny and warm, 80 degrees. After giving some of my spots a day to warm up, things are headed in the right direction.  Multiple trees that have established themselves as reliable over the last few years are now growing fresh morel mushrooms.  This was not the case two days ago on my last mushroom hunt.  Most of the morels we found today were very small, pinky nail sized and left to grow.  We were able to walk away with enough for the frying pan which is a success

May 5, 2018 What: Morel Mushroom Hunt Location: Madison County, Nebraska along the Elkhorn River. Conditions: Sunny and warm, 82 degrees.   Report: If yesterday was slow, today was slower.  Here is yesterday’s morel mushroom report in case you missed it.  I was hoping that things improved enough to matter  yesterday with the warmer temps (it got close to 80 yesterday).  Ground temperatures must be just a little cold yet.  Hiked some proven ground for 2+ hours and did not find a single morel mushroom.  Weather was nice though and it was good to get out for a hike this morning
